Firefighters find 480 marijuana plants at house

Stoneham Police Find Marijuana Growing Operation Found After House Fire

STONEHAM, Mass. (AP) — Police say emergency crews responding to a house fire in Stoneham, north of Boston, found 480 marijuana plants that could ultimately have produced as much as $2 million worth in illegal street sales.

Police said the fire was discovered by a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier who saw smoke coming from the second floor of the house just before 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters quickly put out the blaze, and then found the plants. Police and federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents later carried out search warrants at the house, removing boxes of evidence.

Police Chief James McIntyre said they discovered “a major, sophisticated drug producing operation.”

Police are looking for a 35-year-old man believed to have lived there as a person of interest in the case.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined.
