Summer heat with less than two weeks left of spring

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – For those of you wanting to get outside, it was the perfect weekend.

“It’s about time. I’m definitely excited to get the summer started,” said Alonzo Johnson from Springfield.

Even though summer hasn’t officially arrived yet, early morning beach goers hit the sand at the Chicopee State Park on Sunday.

“I was here with my grandson yesterday, he really enjoyed it so I came back today just to walk and to reach and enjoy the outdoors,” said Eileen McKeever from Springfield.

Normal high temperatures this time of year are in the upper 70s, but the heat of this weekend didn’t feel much like spring.

It already felt like summer this weekend with 80s both Saturday and Sunday, but summer doesn’t officially begin for another two weekends on Saturday, June 21st.

The summerlike warmth felt like the perfect opportunity to get families out of the house, after spending so much of this past winter cooped up inside.

“I knew that it was going to be a nice day out so I figured I’d get the summer started early and take my kids out with my friend and come out here and spend the day at the water,” said Deborah Canjura from Springfield.

Reflecting on this winter was on the minds of many beach goers this Sunday; just three months ago we were still dealing with snow.

Now that our feet are in the sand and not snow, many people are appreciating weekends like this more now than they did last summer.

“It’s really nice out. After having a really long winter it’s just every day I can’t take it for granted…Everybody’s like ‘oh my God the sun is finally out’ and you can smell the grass and the lawn mowers come out and you’re like thank God, ” said Amanda Biron from Springfield.

With summer just around the corner there’s bound to be plenty more days like this to be thankful for.
