Pine Point neighborhood reacts to reoccurring robberies

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)–Police are still searching for two men responsible for an armed robbery in the Pine Point neighborhood of Springfield. 22News found out how the reoccurring robberies are affecting residents and business owners there.

“Cuz you know I knew the second guy had a gun.” For Wilfredy Burgos, Saturday’s third shift at the Tedeschi Food Shop on Boston Rd. was a shocking one. “It’s not like a movie. You shut off the movie and go to sleep. What happened was reality. It hit me like that! I saw my life before my eyes. I just didn’t want my kids to wake up, ‘where’s daddy?’,” Burgos said.

Just after midnight Saturday, two men came into the store, one wearing a mask, pointed a gun at Burgos and the woman clerk he was working with, and demanded cash from the safe and register.

Neighbors that are living next door to the shop said that the store’s been targeted several times before but that knowing this time there was a gun involved has left them feeling unsettled.

“When I hear this stuff like this, and right, so close… it’s scary! It is, it’s scary,” neighbor Luther Monts, told 22News.

Across the street at Fabulous Cuts Barber Shop, owner Joe Long Jr. says every time there is a robbery like this in the area it leaves him feeling uneasy.

“Am I going to be next? It’s discouraging you know it’s already a tough economy. A break-in would definitely de-rail what we are trying to do,” Long said. He also told 22News his shop has been targeted three times in the 12 years he’s been open, forcing him to add things like security cameras at an added cost to his business.

Springfield Police Lt. Thomas Maccini told 22News this is not the first incident of this kind at this convenience store.  For the most recent one, so far, no arrests have been made.
