Fire on Whiting Street believed to have been set

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Sleeping tenants at 57 Whiting Street in Springfield were unaware this morning that someone had put them in danger by setting fire to a mattress in the cellar.

Springfield Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger showed 22News where the fire started in the cellar, a fire believed to have been intentional.

Luckily the tenants can continue living in their second floor apartments.

The vacant first floor was a buffer between them and the cellar.

Whiting Street is in the North End neighborhood of Springfield.
