Victim of Springfield’s 5th homicide identified

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A man who was killed in a shooting in Springfield’s Maple High-Six Corners neighborhood early Wednesday evening has been identified as a 33 year-old resident of Central Street.

Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that Juan A. Rodriguez, Jr. was found by police officers lying on the ground in front of 23 Avon Place, the gunshot victim was not responding, and had no pulse. Rodriguez was taken to Baystate Medical Center, but had died by the time he got there.

Delaney says that no arrests have yet been made, but police worked around the clock to follow-up on leads. Anyone with any information is urged to call Springfield Police Detectives at (413) 787-6355, or you can anonymously “text-a-tip.”

Rodriguez’s killing was the fifth homicide in Springfield in 2014, but the second in less than 24 hours. Shortly after midnight, Darrell Jenkins of Springfield died when he was shot in the head on Kensington Avenue.
