Mastroianni won’t have any say in his replacement

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Five months before Hampden County voters will elect a new District Attorney, Governor Deval Patrick will have to appoint an interim D.A.

The U.S. Senate confirmed current D.A. Mark Mastroianni as a federal judge Wednesday.

The District Attorney is in charge of prosecuting criminal cases in the county.  Mastroianni expects to vacate his office in the next week to ten days when he is officially sworn in.  He told 22News he has no say in his replacement, but is confident in whomever the Governor will choose.

“The office obviously needs strong leadership and leadership that understands what direction it should go in,” said Mastroianni.

Mastroianni will replace retiring Judge Michael Ponsor at Springfield’s U.S. District Court.
