Chicago Ride for a Cure stops in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield is the last stop for 25 members of the Chicago Fire Department riding their bikes from Chicago to Boston, riding for a cure.

Springfield firefighters hung a huge flag over Court Square to welcome the Henry Schueler “Wrigley to Fenway” Ride for a Cure.

The ride is raising money for the “41 & 9 Foundation,” named for a firefighter’s son who died of Leukemia. The numbers were his sports jersey numbers.

“We lived in an area of Chicago where there’s a number of firefighter families and they reached out to us. They said they wanted to raise money for our foundation. So just like firefighters everywhere, they’re very generous of spirit and heart,” said Matt Schueler, Henry’s father.

Springfield is the riders’ eleventh stop in eleven days, and their ride ends at Fenway Park on Friday.

The Springfield Firefighters Union and Mayor Sarno both made donations to the “41 & 9 Foundation.”
