SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Anger and fear are some of the emotions being felt by people in Springfield’s Bay neighborhood after a violent night in the city that included a shooting on Maynard Street.
Three people were shot in Springfield in the early morning hours on Wednesday, with one person dying after a shooting on Kensington Avenue in Forest Park that wounded one woman. In the third shooting on Maynard Street, the victim was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to the stomach and thigh, according to police Capt. Harry Kastrinakis.
One woman who lives in the Bay neighborhood told 22News she has changed her daily routine because of all the violence.
She would only speak to us off-camera to keep her identity a secret.
“Life is actually dangerous living here. I mean, I work every day, sometimes I take walks during the evening and at night, and lately i have stopped, because I’ve been approached by different people,” she said.
“It’s just awful to live here, and if you speak with the police, you’re a snitch.”
The woman told 22News that having more police officers in the area won’t solve the neighborhood’s problems. She believes more must be done to help the young people get out of the gang culture.
