SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Police are investigating a shooting on Avon Place in Springfield where a man was shot and later died. This is Springfield’s fifth homicide of the year.
According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, police received 911 calls around 5:09 p.m. of a shooting at 15 Avon Place. Police found a 33-year-old man from Springfield in front of that address suffering from a gunshot wound.
Sgt. Delaney said officers performed first aid and CPR, and called for an ambulance. The victim later died on arrival at the Baystate Emergency Room.
Police Commissioner John Barbieri has ordered extra patrols to stop the violence in high crime areas in Springfield, said Sgt. Delaney.
This is an ongoing investigation. Detective Lieutenant Maurice Kearney is running the investigation, and other members of the Homicide Unit are assisting. The area has been restricted for the Forensic Unit of the SPD and State Police to gather evidence.
This was the fifth homicide in Springfield and the third shooting in 24 hours. Springfield’s fourth homicide happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. A 23-year-old man from Springfield was killed in the city’s Forest Park neighborhood.
