Group wants to end the caging of farm animals

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Several people gathered in Westfield Tuesday to demand the end of caging for farm animals in Massachusetts.

Members of the Massachusetts Coalition for Humane Farms gathered at Park Square, where they displayed the cages that some egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs are kept in on farms.

The group is calling for the passage of a bill that would ban the use of these types of confinement on farms in the state.

According to Alexis Fox of the Mass. Coalition for Humane Farms, “Two weeks ago we had 200 people out in front of the steps of the State House telling legislators they want to see this bill pass; they care about the humane treatment of farm animals.”

The bill was referred to the Joint Committee on the Judiciary last year. A report on the bill is set for June 30th.
