NEAR WATERLOO, Iowa (WOWT) An enjoyable float down Nebraska’s Elkhorn River took a drastic turn for many Sunday when a violent storm hit.
Witnesses said the water went from still to turbulent in a matter of seconds when 50 mile per hour winds swept through. Minutes later, rain and hail were added to the mix.
Aaron Watkins and a friend were tubing on the river when the storm hit.
“We thought we were going to die,” Watkins said.
The pair was able to get out of the water and take refuge. They admit their mothers advised them not to go out, but they didn’t listen.
