Study: Facebook making married couples unhappy

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Facebook connects us to our friends and family members, but a new study found that social media use could also lead to growing divorce rates.

Boston University researchers studied data from more than 1,000 married couples. They found that non-social network users reported being 11 percent happier with their marriage than heavy social media users.

Other studies in the past have linked excessive Facebook use to declining life satisfaction as well.

“Social media kind of takes away from your social life,” said David Grier of Springfield. “A lot of times people that do that don’t really have any social life outside of Facebook. They just sit around and do nothing.”

Researchers say comparing your life to what others post on social media leads to unhappiness, but face-to-face interaction can have the opposite effect.
