Do you need travel insurance?

(NBC) If your summer vacation plans have you going to the tropics, remember that hurricane season officially starts Sunday. Then, maybe reconsider the answer you gave about travel insurance.

CNBC’s Kelli Grant says travel companies are making it harder for consumers to get refunds in the event things don’t go as planned or promised.

“Be it an illness or something else that prevents you from taking that cruise all the way down to suddenly there is an outbreak, rioting somewhere that you don’t want to go to anymore,” said Grant.

You may not want to go, but the travel company’s still going.

The more complicated the trip, the likelier the need for insurance.

Grant’s advice: avoid buying insurance through the same company selling your tour.

“You want to go to a neutral third party and you’ll find a lot of different options on sites like squaremouth.com and insuremytrip.com,” Grant advised.

And make sure the policy is tailored precisely to your needs; a little more if scuba or skydiving’s part of your plan.
