Mayor Sarno: People of Springfield helped city recover

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A look at some homes that have been rebuilt and repaired on Island Pond Road after the tornado shows that many of them had to be completely knocked down and built from the ground up.

There is also progress at the Brookings School in Springfield, the tornado destroyed the school and work was being done on it Friday as a new school is being built.  Springfield mayor Domenic Sarno told 22News in the immediate aftermath of the tornado, it was the people of Springfield that helped the city recover.

“Many of us were together non-stop for three weeks, 24/7 and for months on after that, but what kept us going was really the resilency of the people of Springfield, no matter where I went night and day, nobody complained.”

The Brookings School is expected to open in the fall of 2015.
