SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An illegal U-turn led Springfield police to arrest a man who they say is a known gang member.
Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that Malik Lowe, 23, of Springfield, was arrested on weapons charges during a traffic stop near Hancock Street.
According to Delaney, police have been extensively patrolling the Union Street area following Monday’s murder of Lenezzia Clarke. While on patrol in an unmarked cruiser, street crime officers spotted a 2013 Toyota with South Carolina plates that Delaney says was driving erratically and made an illegal U-turn.
He says that the officers noticed the car was full of known gang members.
The officers pulled the car over, and Delaney says they noticed Lowe, who was in the back seat, trying to hide a gun. Lowe was taken out of the car, and officers seized a fully loaded .25 caliber handgun.
He is being charged with carrying a loaded firearm and possession of a firearm without a permit.
Delaney says that police will continue to pay close attention to this section of the city, in order to make it uncomfortable for gang members to come and go.
