Man killed in Springfield rollover crash identified

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A man who died from his injuries in a rollover crash on St. James Avenue in Springfield early Wednesday morning had been brought to the hospital by a friend, and detectives are still trying to figure out what led up to the deadly accident.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that Dwayne D. Borbua, 21, of Putnam Circle in Springfield died at Baystate Medical Center at 12:11 A.M.

According to Delaney, police were called to Page Boulevard and St. James Avenue at midnight, after a Volvo SUV rolled over, crashing into a utility pole and the median. No one was inside the SUV when police got there.

Minutes later, officers were called to the hospital due to a disturbance in the emergency department. There, they found several people, including one who admitted to bringing his friend to Baystate after the accident. He told police he was following Borbua in another vehicle prior to the accident, but did not actually see the crash happen.

Delaney says that it remains unclear whether Borbua was the only person who was inside the Volvo at the time of the crash. He says that illegal narcotics were found inside the SUV.
