SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s a preventable tragedy, but it happens every summer. Even a 10-foot fall from a window can cause serious injury to a child.
Janet Kingsbury Warren’s sister fell from a second floor window when she was five. She told 22News, “There was no air conditioning in the house so of course we had to open all the windows in the summer. There were screens on the windows, but little did we know, when you push against the screen, it falls out, and guess what, you can fall out with it.”
Her sister is fine now, but not everyone is that lucky. Five years ago, a two-year-old Springfield boy fell to his death from a window. In fact, more than 33-hundred kids under 5 are seriously hurt every year after accidental falls, but something as simple as a 35-dollar window guard can help save a child’s life.

You can think of it as a baby gate, or a pet gate, that you can put up at the top or bottom of the stairs, and the window guard works both ways, too. It can prevent some one from falling our or coming in to your house through the window.
Rocky’s East Longmeadow Manager Mark Tetreault told 22News “It is a very simple device. It expands to different window widths, and it screws into the framework.”
You can also place window stops that prevent windows from opening more than a few inches. And keep furniture or other items kids could climb on away from windows.
