Assistance offered to WMass disabled veterans

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Advocates anxious to help veterans came to Western Massachusetts Wednesday.

The non-profit Disabled American Veterans brought their mobile service office to American Legion Post 275 in Chicopee. Counselors helped western Massachusetts vets with the paperwork that will hopefully speed up the Veterans Administration’s action on their claims.

Stephen Hyde, a Vietnam veteran from Southampton, was among those who came out Wednesday.

“I never filed a claim for my disability until in the last year and a half. Was having problems with filing my claim with the federal government, and I was introduced to the DAV, one of our veterans groups in Chicopee, and they’ve helped me immensely,” Hyde said.

The DAV mobile office is on its annual visit through Massachusetts. For the next two days, the counselors will hear disabled veterans’ concerns in Worcester County.
