WENDELL, Mass. (WWLP) – Concerns about chemicals inside a blue barrel caused a hazardous materials team to be called-in to the eastern Franklin County town of Wendell late Tuesday morning.
Firefighters and officials from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection were out investigating on West Orange Road from about 10:00 A.M. until around noontime.
Wendell Fire Chief Joe Cuneo told 22News that they determined that the barrel contained a mix of kerosene and water. He said that the barrel appears to have been in the area for a long time.
Catherine Skiba, the regional spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, told 22News that a contractor is on the way to safely remove the barrel. The barrel will be put into a protective package, and the soil in the area that surrounded the barrel will be excavated and hauled away.
