CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Tuesday was western Massachusetts second day in a row with temperatures in the 80s.
Air conditioning units have gotten smaller, lighter and more energy efficient. Over time, the size of the compressor in the units has gotten smaller which makes them quieter as well.
Some of the newer energy efficient models come with instant rebates through our local energy companies, but when you’re deciding which unit to buy to cool a space in your home, make sure to get the correct size.
According to Christopher Swett of Clewetts Appliance in Ware, “If you have too big of an air conditioner for a room it can actually frost up and basically, because it’s cooling too quickly, it actually causes some issues with the air conditioner so you really want to make sure you have the right air conditioner for the right room size.”
Air conditioners cooling ability is measured in BTU’s. The bigger the room, the more BTU’s you’ll need to cool it.
For a small bedroom around 150 square feet, a 5,000 BTU air conditioner unit will keep it cool, but if you’re keeping an entire floor or house cool, an 18,000 BTU unit might be needed for a 1,200 square foot space.
Taller ceilings or sun facing windows might require more BTU’s to cool the room.
