Army: 3 out of 4 young Americans ‘too fat to fight’

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Some retired military leaders are worried about the future of the military. The Army says more than three-fourths of young Americans between 17 and 24 aren’t eligible to join the military.

Hundreds of retired veterans are now supporting the ‘Mission: Readiness’ nonprofit. They think a solution to this national security issue is cracking down on the childhood obesity epidemic with healthy school lunches, and putting them on track to graduate by making pre-K education more accessible.

Eileen Laford of Springfield said, “We need to focus more on physical education. Our kids don’t even get 60 minutes of activity a day.”

These military leaders say even military roles like nurses, and servicemen and women on ships and submarines need to be fit, strong, and alert.
