EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News was there Monday morning as those veterans got their first look at the bikes they will be riding this summer.
The veterans talked about what an emotional day Memorial Day is for them each year, but they said Monday was especially emotional because they felt these bikes are giving them their freedom back. This whole thing started as just an idea that soldier David Chevalier shared with his family.
Chevalier explained to 22News these bikes are going help eliminate the veterans living at the VA medical center to have to wait for a bus and will eliminate some of the other stresses that come with not having their own mode of transportation.
Army Veteran David Chevalier of Worthington told 22News, “Absolutely overjoyed. It’s been something we have been working towards for a long time. My wife and my children already gave up their bikes to other homeless vets on the hill. Now we have this, which just blows that out of the water.”
His ideas and big dreams don’t stop there, Chevalier is working on getting a bike shop set up at the Veterans hospital so that the residents there can use activity time to repair their own bikes.
On the way out of the VA Medical Center, David Chevalier asked to share one more message with our 22News viewers on this Memorial Day and that message was simply, God Bless America.
