Agawam families remember veterans at the cemetery

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Many western Massachusetts families spent this Memorial Day honoring their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

For more than a decade, the veteran’s cemetery in Agawam has been a very special place for thousands of western Massachusetts families. The Agawam cemetery is a final resting place for more than 6,500 military members.

All day Monday, you could see families coming by with flowers, spending some time with their loved ones on this Memorial Day. At each grave site is an American flag to honor each and every one of these veterans.

22News spoke with William Walls, the director of this state cemetery. He told 22News volunteers placed American flags at each grave site last Wednesday to pay special tributes to each and every one of these veterans.

“It’s a fabulous piece of real estate and a fabulous tribute to our veteran community, and especially for western Massachusetts, western Mass. has a real gem out here,” said Walls, “It’s a place of dignity and honor for each of our veterans. It’s just a tribute to them and their service.”

The gates remained open until sun down for families who wished to honor their veterans.
