SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) – One person is dead after a car accident on I-291 in Springfield early Sunday morning.
State Police Sergeant Michael Andrews told 22News, a car traveling east bound on I-291 near exit 4, crashed into a tractor trailer that was pulled over in the breakdown lane just after 1:00 a.m.
The passenger of the vehicle was killed.
The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Moti K. Kuikel of West Springfield.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 22-year-old Rudra P. Kafley of West Springfield. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center.
Andrews said the crash was alcohol related and the driver was arrested.
According to the media release, the initial investigation suggests that before the crash, the driver of the tractor trailer, 52-year-old Gilbert B. Malagad, had stopped the tractor trailer in the breakdown lane in order to investigate a mechanical issue. Malagad was outside the truck at the time of the crash, and was not injured.
