Ceremony held for Vietnam War veterans in Chicopee

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – A solemn and reflective candlelit ceremony was held in Chicopee on Sunday. The purpose: to honor our nation’s heroes who were either killed or are still missing in action from the Vietnam War.

It took place at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park on Chicopee Street. There were 15 men from Chicopee who gave their lives during the war.

Sunday’s ceremony honored them by lighting a candle under the plaque associated with each name.

Veteran Josh Morin of Palmer told 22News, “One of these names on the monument could have been me. That’s pretty much why I’m here, to honor those who didn’t make it.”

The service began a 7 o’clock and also included poetry readings, the placing of a wreath and cross and a rifle salute.

It was a moving tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
