BOSTON (AP) — Environmental activists pushing Massachusetts to divest its state pension fund from fossil fuel companies are getting encouragement from some gubernatorial candidates.

At least three Democratic candidates are offering full or qualified support for the activists, who have also tried to pressure universities and local governments to pull financial support from the companies to help raise awareness about the effects of climate change.

Attorney General Martha Coakley and state Treasurer Steve Grossman have given the proposal qualified support, saying they would back it as long as the state can meet its financial obligations. Fellow Democratic candidate Don Berwick has called for immediate divestment.

Independent candidate Evan Falchuk says he’d leave the decision to voters while fellow independent Jeff McCormick opposes the idea.
