HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – State fire officials have completed their investigation into a devastating fire this past fall that destroyed a Hadley shopping plaza.

State Fire Marshal Stephan Coan said Friday that they have been unable to determine the cause of the fire which started at the Hadley Coin Op Laundromat on October 27. The fire spread to adjacent businesses, destroying the strip mall, which housed a total of eleven shops and restaurants.

Coan says that much of the evidence of what started the fire was itself consumed by flames, which has made it particularly difficult to determine what happened.

“The fire started directly behind a bank of dryers in the laundromat, but there is not enough evidence to determine specifically which dryer was involved, or the exact ignition source,” Coan said.

The bank of dryers is being removed by the insurance company for possible testing.

If new information comes to light, Coan says that state police will investigate.
