Warmer weather helping local farmers with spring crops

SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WWLP) – A lot of native spring crops may be the highlight of Memorial Day weekend celebrations, much of it from western Massachusetts.

The owner of Calabrese Farms in Southwick, Tom Calabrese, said he’s got a bumper drop of fresh picked spinach, rhubarb and asparagus. They’re ready in time for the holiday weekend.

But there is one crop that’s not quite ready, and Calabrese blames the cold winter for the delay.

“Well we should have the lettuce, should be almost ready,” said Calabrese. “We’re about two weeks behind; ten days or two weeks behind.”

Now that the ground is warming up for the garden planting season, Calabrese said he expects many home gardeners will be busy planting their summer veggies and flowers during the holiday weekend.
