Emergency repair on I-91 may cause delays for weeks

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – After a recent bridge inspection, the left travel lane of I-91 northbound over Route 5/Mount Tom Road in Northampton will be closed to traffic.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the inspectors found deterioration in a steel beam that requires emergency repairs.

MassDOT said the repairs will take about 4 weeks; however, the time required to order the material means that no work will take place until next week.

So starting next week, MassDOT is expecting to restripe the bridge deck for 2 lanes on the remaining roadway surface.

The lane closure is expected to impact holiday travel. Drivers are strongly encouraged to allow for extra travel time and to use caution when driving through the area once work begins.

Traffic channeling devices have been set up to stop vehicles from traveling over the deteriorated beam.
