SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An open discussion was held Tuesday night on what it means for you to have a family member who had breast cancer or ovarian cancer.
The Mason Square Neighborhood Health Center invited women to discuss the importance of knowing your family history.
If your mother or aunt had breast or ovarian cancer, that could increase your risk of developing those diseases.
However, Baystate Medical Center’s genetics counselors said frequent screenings and a healthy lifestyle could reduce your risk.
According to Elisabeth Depergola of the Baystate Medical Center, “They could get their mammogram. They could do breast self exam. They can get genetic testing if they meet the criteria. They can exercise and eat right.”
