Biden turns down CT prom invite, sends corsage

NEWINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Newington High School’s prom just wasn’t very appealing to then 17-year old Talia Maselli unless Joe Biden — yes, Vice President of the United States Joe Biden — took her. So she set out to get his attention.

“She said ‘I’m going to write him a letter’,” Mom Dawn Maselli said. “So for her it was like a joke.”2014-05-19-biden-prom-talia

In the letter Talia calls the vice president “the most delightful man in all of America,” but warns if he turns her down she might have to invite Speaker of the House John Boehner.

Talia never expected Vice President Biden to see the letter, so she was skeptical when she got a knock on the door the day before the prom.

“I thought it was a practical joke because the guy gave me a corsage and that letter and said that the Secret Service told him to bring it to me,” Talia told News 8.

The corsage was hand picked by the vice president himself, and the letter was his own handwritten response.

“I’m flattered but my schedule will not permit me to be in Connecticut on Friday evening … but I hope you will accept this corsage and enjoy your prom as much as I did mine.”

Talia decided to call a telephone number that came with the letter. She thought she was dialing the florist who delivered the corsage. But it was the White House.

“I already think he’s hilarious; just made me like him more,” Talia said.

Although Talia decided not to go to prom — because she didn’t get to go with the vice president — with the corsage and the letter also a came an invitation to the White House. Talia says that’s even better than going to prom.

“If he said yes I totally would have taken him to prom,” she said.

She hopes to meet up with Biden in July.
