SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)– Beginning Monday, people in the Berkshire County city of North Adams will no longer be without emergency medical care.
A deal offered by Berkshire Medical Center was approved in Springfield’s federal court which will allow a Satellite Emergency Facility to open inside the former North Adams Regional Hospital emergency department.
North Adams Regional Hospital closed its doors back in March, citing financial troubles, leaving hundreds jobless and thousands in the region without access to emergency medical care.
Berkshire Medical Center will run a full service emergency facility inside the former North Adams Regional Hospital emergency department. It will be staffed by many of the former North Adams Regional hospital nurses and doctors.
In a news release sent to 22News, Berkshire Medical Center representatives say that starting Monday at noon, the emergency facility will be open to patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.They said they have also have coordinated with ambulance services in the region.
Berkshire Medical Center also reached an agreement to buy the rest of the North Adams Regional Hospital and all of its equipment. If no one else bids on the hospital, that deal could be finalized this summer.
