CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – A canonization celebration Sunday at St. Stanislaus Basilica in Chicopee honored Pope John Paul II recently being elevated to sainthood.

Hundreds attended the special Mass celebrated in several languages to honor the canonization of Pope John Paul II. Parishioners from Roman Catholic churches throughout western Massachusetts were invited.

Polish Americans feel deeply about sainthood for the first polish Pope.

Parishioner John Michon of St. Stanislaus Basilica told 22News, “This has been a longtime coming. He’s certainly been the favorite. He’s done so much for the world, not just for the polish people.”

“Pope John Paul II, personally, was the people’s Pope and I just feel very honored to have him as my pope during my lifetime,” said Debbie Tomazewski, organizer of the celebration.

Following mass, more than five hundred of the faithful gathered at the St. Stanislaus School next door for a celebration dinner.
