HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Here in Western Massachusetts, fishing has always been a favorite form of father and son bonding. That “togetherness” is never more evident than during the Shad Fishing Derby along the Connecticut River near the Holyoke Dam.
Walter Figueroa of Westfield and his son made certain to get in a few hours of fishing together. Figueroa told 22News he knows of the long term benefits.
“I’m here with my son. We’re just here to be in the derby. I’ve been coming here since I was 12, with my father. We’re just sharing the time with my son now,” said Figuero.
Eugene Rentas of Chicopee told 22News, “My mother brought me here, but I came here with my best friend Eric, we came because we just love to fish and it’s the best thing we do every day”
This was the final day of the 49th annual Shad fishing derby attended by hundreds of avid fishermen during the past two weekends.
