Teach Your Dog to Walk on a Leash

CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal) Dog walking can be quite challenging for those with dogs who don’t behave well on walks. Jim Helems joined us to share tips to make it more enjoyable for man — and man’s best friend.

Equipment:

  • Leash should be a 4′ or 6′ flat style leash

Body gear:

  • For a dog that only pulls a little you can use a back style harness
  • For a dog who is a steady puller, but under control use a front clip harness
  • For a dog who is out of control use a Gentle Leader

Do not use:

  • Retractable leash
  • Shock Collar
  • Choke style Collar
  • Prong Collar

How to Train Your Dog:

Start inside (low distractions).
Place leash on dog and reward for a loose leash
Slowly step away from dog and reward for dog maintaining loose leash
Walk around house while rewarding for a loose leash
Then move to garage, back yard, front yard and to areas with more distractions.
Do not negotiate with dog when walking or you start to loose control
