HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Police are investigating a shooting that involved an officer and a SUV near South Bridge Street and Hamilton Street in downtown Holyoke.
According to Holyoke Police Chief James Neiswanger, around 10:00 p.m. Thursday, officers pulled over the SUV, after the vehicle was linked to a home invasion.
Chief Neiswanger did not say what led to that shooting, but at some point during the traffic stop, an officer fired a shot towards the front of the SUV. No one was hurt.
The driver of SUV, 24-year-old Luis Gomez of Holyoke was arrested and charged with a driving with a suspended license, said Chief Neiswanger.
Gomez has a history with the Holyoke Police Department. Chief Neiswanger said Gomez has been arraigned 37 times, and is a member of the La Familia gang.
The passenger of the SUV, who Nieswanger says was also a member of La Familia, was not arrested.
The intersection of South Bridge and Hamilton Streets was closed to traffic Thursday night because of the police investigation. The SUV was surrounded by police caution tape before being towed away.
Neiswanger also added that the name of the officer who fired his weapon is not being released at this time. The officer’s weapon has been taken away for investigation, but he will still be carrying a replacement gun.
