Man arrested for murder in shaken baby death

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A suspect who was wanted on a murder charge in connection with the shaking death of a baby in Holyoke has been arrested.

Holyoke police, Capt. Denise Duguay told 22News that Luis Prosper was arrested Tuesday night at 175 Maple Street in Springfield.  He was charged with murder, assault and battery and abuse and neglect of a child aged 0-18.  Capt. Duguay said it was a case of shaken baby syndrome from 2011.

He was arraigned in Holyoke District Court and pleaded not guilty. He was ordered held on $500,000 bail, and is due back in court on June 17.

In August 2011, 22News reported on the death of a 19-month old at 93 Jackson Street in Holyoke. Jaliya Silva was found unresponsive.  At the time, Sgt. Manuel Reyes told 22News the girl had cuts and bruises and the “death may be the result of a suspected beating.”  Capt. Duguay would not confirm that this was the case related to this recent arrest.
