People and pancakes shut down Springfield’s Main Street

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)– Thousands of people and pancakes filled Springfield’s Main street Saturday morning. 22News was there as the city hosted the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast.

Saturday morning, Springfield’s annual pancake breakfast transformed Main Street into an extra long breakfast table.

Thousands of families braved the early morning rain to hear music, ride trains, and eat lots and lots of pancakes. But the day was about more than just food.

Jim Craig, from Springfield, told 22News, “It shows support from the community members to get together and share some time.”

To keep the people fed, more than 200 hundred volunteers flipped hundreds of gallons of batter.

The event’s host, the Spirit of Springfield, also got a helping hand from the Massachusetts Army National Guard who transported the hundreds of gallons of pancake batter into the city’s downtown.

They were also there in the early morning hours setting up hundreds of tables and thousands of chairs that made up one of the world’s largest breakfast table.

Getting a chance to share that table with other members of the community is what many people told 22News, is what keeps them coming back year after year.

“This is a way for us to show the love that we have for Springfield, the community, and what better way than to enjoy some food,” Virna Campbell-Langford, from Springfield, said.

Lawrence Sherman, brought his family’s five kids over the state line from Enfield, Connecticut. Sherman told 22news, “Well it’s good because there is enough bad stuff going on out there that stuff like this really matters.”

The city of Springfield was founding in May in the year 1636, making this year’s pancake breakfast a celebration for the city’s 378th Birthday.
