Mother who jumped from burning apartment faces paralysis

NEW YORK (CNN) – A young mother who jumped from a burning apartment building with her toddler says her injuries are so severe, she may never be able to walk again.

From her hospital bed, Christina Simoes spoke about the ordeal and her chances of recovery.

“I am not doing too great but I am alive,” said Simoes.

From her hospital bed, Christina Simoes pain is evident.

“This is the longest he has been away from her so.” Her boyfriend brought the love of her life to her bedside and probably the best medicine a doctor could prescribe.

“This is the first time seeing him again and it’s amazing. It is so great to see him perfectly fine,” said Simoes.

18-month-old Cameron is seeing his mother for the first time since she made the most difficult decision of her life, jumping out of a third-floor window with her son clutched in her arms.

“I just held my legs out the window, I grabbed him and held him as tight as I could. I kissed him and told him I loved him and then jumped,” said Simoes.

It was a painful impact. Christina lost feeling in her legs as her back broke and the escape was not over, “I had to try and army crawl with my elbows to get away from all the debris that was falling on us,” said Simoes.

Amazingly, Cameron survived with only a bump cushioned by his mother’s sacrifice. Her brave and daring decision has prompted an outpouring from our viewers. Thousands have shared the story on our Facebook page calling Christina an amazing mother who defines motherhood in every sense of the word.

“There is a chance I won’t be able to walk,” said Simoes.

She knows how uncertain her future is but the one certainty who she saved with a leap of faith is back in her arms again.

“It is so worth it because he is okay,” said Simoes.
