SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)-  A man who was found lying on the edge of a Springfield sidewalk with four gunshot wounds late Thursday night, refused to tell police who shot him.

Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that the department’s ShotSpotter system picked up the noise of several shots fired around 100 Central Street at 11:57 p.m.

An officer got there within minutes, and found the victim, who was suffering from several gunshot wounds to the buttocks, hip, and left side. Delaney says that a person driving by had stopped and began administering first aid to the victim just before the police arrived. An ambulance was called, and the victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he had been listed in critical condition. Delaney says that the victim’s condition is now stable, and he is expected to survive.

Delaney says that the victim is a “self-proclaimed gang member,” who has an extensive record with the police. He said that he would only offer his name and date of birth to police, and would not discuss who shot him.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to Text-a-tip or call the Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355.
