More Americans favor legalizing pot over online gambling

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A new poll reveals that more Americans favor the legalization of marijuana for recreational use than they are online gambling.

The Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind Poll found 50% of Americans favor legalizing pot, while 63% percent are against internet gambling.

Some people told 22News didn’t like either pastime, but if they had to choose they’d legalize online gambling. Chris Cote said, “Because of the drug addiction I wouldn’t go for marijuana I would go towards the gambling. I think eventually marijuana leads to other drugs.”

The poll found that 65% of respondents are not following the internet gambling issue in the news, but more than 50% oppose the idea. In contrast, more than 80% of Americans are paying attention to the legalization of pot in the news, and 50%  like the idea.

However, some residents told 22News, they wouldn’t vote for the legalization of either activity. “I’ve seen gamblers who’ve gambled away grocery money or rent money, and I’ve seen folks start with marijuana that just led on to other things,” said Fernando Gonzalez.

Online gambling is currently legal in 3 states; New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware. 65% of young adults support legalizing pot, compared to less than 50% of baby boomers.
