SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Volunteers cleaned up vacant lots in Springfield Thursday, to clear the way for the building of new homes.

Volunteers from Liberty Mutual Insurance Company removed debris from several lots in the Maple High-Six Corners neighborhood. It’s where the organization DevelopSpringfield hopes to acquire land and sell the property to housing developers.

“They’re helping us out tidy up the lots, some city lots in the area. They empty lots collect garbage. They want to look good for the neighborhood,” Ben Murphy of DevelopSpringfield said.

The hope is that once the developers buy the land, they will build single-family homes and help improve the neighborhood.
