Gun scare near WNEU campus caused by parade rifle

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A report from a concerned citizen over what they believed was a person with a gun near Western New England University turned out to be a big misunderstanding.

Barbara Moffat, WNEU’s Vice President for Marketing and External Affairs, told 22News that on Wednesday, a passing driver on Wilbraham Road called Springfield Police after seeing what they believed to be a person armed with a rifle.

Moffat says Springfield Police called WNEU police, and they investigated the matter.

It turned out that the person that the driver saw was returning a non-functioning ceremonial rifle (the kind used by marchers in parades) to WNEU’s ROTC program on Wilbraham Road.
