Cleaning up Springfield before the Pancake Breakfast

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Dozens of volunteers from across western Massachusetts were in Springfield Saturday to help spruce up the downtown district.

“Really revitalize the area and show people that Springfield isn’t what it once was thought to be.. it’s a great sense of community,” said Keith Ornelas who works in Springfield.

This is the first year the Springfield clean-up project was held.

Volunteers were broken up into groups, and set out on different routes throughout the downtown area.

Whether it’s picking up garbage or raking up litter, one thing all the volunteers had in common is there hope for a new and improved Springfield.

“There’s a lot of negativity going on around Springfield right now and it’s nice to do be doing something positive that’s actually improving the city,” said Jackie Farrow of Springfield.

22News spoke with the Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt. She says it shows how much people want to see the city grow and prosper.

“People want to make a difference in their city. And it’s not just people from Springfield it’s people from all over who want to help because if Springfield goes so goes the rest of the region,” said Judy Matt.

Matt says it was started to help get the roads ready for the big Pancake Breakfast on Main Street next Saturday.
