SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A tweet sent out Wednesday by the account of the state’s official website may have implied that victims were to blame for sexual assault, something that Governor Deval Patrick says was “stupid.”
The tweet from Mass.gov’s Twitter account reading “Sexual assault is always avoidable” was released Wednesday night. The tweet was designed to coincide with the end of Sexual Assault Awareness month, but some people felt that the use of the word “avoidable” instead of “preventable” was offensive.
22News asked the governor about it on Thursday morning when he visited the planned UMass Satellite Center in downtown Springfield.
“Stupid! It was a stupid comment that certainly does not reflect the views of this administration, my own, or frankly of the director of the organization,” Patrick said.
The Governor told 22News that he is pleased the director of Mass.gov, Geoffrey Kula, had made a public apology on Twitter.
Kula said that the tweet’s author will now have to go through sexual assault awareness training.
