Holyoke hopes to bring down teen pregnancy

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The city of Holyoke continues to have one of the highest teen birth rates in the state.

In 2010, the Holyoke’s teen birth rate was almost five times the state teen pregnancy rate. Eighty-three of 1,000 Holyoke teens gave birth, according to data from the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy. That number is down significantly from 2009, but Holyoke school officials want to reduce it even more.

Parents told 22News dedicating additional resources to prevention education will help.

“Girls get pregnant early, they are not going to necessarily finish high school. They are certainly not necessarily going to go to college, so they get stuck in a spiral,” said Margery Gann, a concerned parent.

Holyoke Public Schools will hold “You Have Choices” assemblies Friday at Dean Technical High School and Holyoke High School.
