NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — A former University of Massachusetts student has been acquitted of charges that he raped a fellow student in his Amherst dorm room.

Nineteen-year-old Weiland Wang was cleared by a Hampshire Superior Court jury on Wednesday of rape and three counts of indecent assault and battery.

Prosecutors say Wang raped the woman, who was his friend, after she came to room to study in February 2013. Both are originally from China.

Wang told police he had attempted to sexually assault the woman. But on the stand in his own defense, Wang said he did that to protect her honor, because she had a boyfriend in China and it is shameful in their culture for a woman to date two men at once.

Wang’s lawyer says his client is “elated and relieved.”
