Weather warnings give precious minutes to act

SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) – Tornado or severe thunderstorm warnings can give you precious minutes to act before bad weather arrives.

The National Weather Service in Taunton initiates those warnings which the 22News Storm Team then passes on to you.

Springfield director of emergency preparedness Robert Hassett sees huge advantages in having cell phones during weather emergencies. “We need to pay attention to these alerts because it’s not for something happening in a different part of the state it’s happening right where you are. So it’s very important to pay attention and heed the warnings that you receive over these devices it could save your life.”

During the tornado last July in east Windsor, wireless weather alerts are being credited with saving 35 people when a tornado tore through an inflatable soccer complex.  Owning a NOAA weather radio can also give you life saving weather warning.
