Police say standoff in Belchertown diffused by successful negotiation

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – A section of Main Street in Belchertown was closed for about two hours overnight as police negotiated with a woman that had barricaded herself inside a building.

The Massachusetts State Police Special Tactical Operations Team and the local police department were sent to the area, near the intersection with East Street, around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Sgt. Mark Coleman of the Massachusetts State Police Belchertown Barracks said there was a successful negotiation diffusing the standoff, but he said not many details can be released until they determine exactly what happened.

No one has been arrested, but a woman was taken away by an ambulance, Sgt. Coleman said.

The details on what lead up to this event have not been released, though 22News contacted State Police Media Relations Thursday morning, and we were told that there would be an update later in the day.
