Did a Holyoke Police Sgt. receive a harsh enough punishment?

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Holyoke City Councilors want Mayor Alex Mores and Police Chief James Neiswangerthe to explain why a 10 day suspension was an appropriate punishment for a police officer who had twice misplaced his service pistol in public places.

Mayor Morse told the City Council that the issue was closed, and the suspension in this case would not change.

The City Council went into a closed-door session to talk about possible harsher consequences for future violations.

Holyoke Police Sgt. John Hart was suspended after he placed his gun between a handicapped railing and the wall inside the JCPenney’s restroom at the Holyoke mall.

Sgt. Hart had also gotten suspended another time for 5 days without pay in December 2011 after losing a department issued sniper rifle in September 2011. The rifle was recovered months later.
